Class Lecture Series

The Floyd D. Gottwald, Jr. ’43 Visiting Professorship in Leadership and Ethics was established in 2008 as one of the elements of the Center for Leadership and Ethics. The Gottwald Professorship is embedded in one of the fourteen academic departments in order to provide a variety of disciplinary perspectives on leadership and ethics. In addition to teaching courses in the curriculum relating to ethics and leadership, the incumbent presents a lecture on a topic relating to the theme of ethical leadership to one of the four classes of the Corps of Cadets.

HebertThe 2013 Floyd D. Gottwald, Jr. '43 Visiting Professorship in Leadership and Ethics is Dr. Paul V. Hebert '68.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Hebert has worked to promote and support humanitarian action in less developed countries. He has served with the Near East Foundation in Iran, World Bank, UN Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA) and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affair (OCHA). His work has spanned four continents, including Asia and Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

In March 2011, VMI awarded Dr. Hebert the Jonathan Daniels Humanitarian Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant personal sacrifices to protect or improve the lives of others. Former President Jimmy Carter and former Ambassador Andrew Young have also received this award.
