Since it was established in 1936...
The VMI Foundation has worked toward two goals: to provide Virginia Military Institute the private financial support it needs to advance the academic and co-curricular programs that constitute much of its extraordinary education and to ensure that financial considerations never deny young people the opportunity to reap the many rewards of a VMI education.
The VMI Foundation launched its first official fundraising effort in 1939 in conjunction with the Institute's centennial. This campaign was focused on providing benefits for the faculty, academic improvements, and increased funding to then-new Preston Library. Since then, the scope of the VMI Foundation's support has expanded and now every cadet, teacher, and staff member benefits, directly or indirectly, from it.
Throughout its history, the VMI Foundation has been fortunate to have leaders and donors who appreciate the critical role that constant and generous private support plays on Post and who realize that sustained action is necessary to generate such support. It is these people--who have given so generously of their time, talent, and treasure--who are the source of the VMI Foundation's sustained success.
The VMI Foundation will continue to play a leading role in the development of the financial resources necessary for VMI to meet its future challenges and seize new opportunities. To do, it will continue to combine vigorous fundraising and careful stewardship with the consistent engagement of the enduring spirit and substantial energy of VMI’s alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends.
