Miller Academic Center / Office of Disabilities Services is pleased to invite faculty and staff to the Faculty Support and Development workshop series "Learning Disabilities: Understanding the Issues and Supporting Cadet Success"
“In Their Shoes” 10-15 minute on-line training by Penn State
Produced by Penn State University, (www.altoona.psu.edu/intheirshoes) this is a 10-15 minute on-line training program for faculty and staff in higher education.
The program’s goal is to provide an understanding of the legal responsibilities related to services for students with disabilities and a glimpse of what it might be like to walk in the shoes of an individual with a disability. Faculty and staff who complete the program will meet students with disabilities, learn about their experiences, find out how to help them meet their academic goals, and see the world from their perspective.
Although access will be available throughout the Spring 2012 semester, faculty and staff are invited to complete the program as an introduction to the series before the January 27 workshop described below. For the college id to access the training, contact the Miller Academic Center.
Learning Disabilities: Legal & Ethical Foundations/Rights & Responsibilities for Faculty & Cadets

The Americans with Disabilities Act, Title II, and Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act mandate that students with an appropriately documented disability receive equal access to programs and services in higher education.This session will clarify the legal components that are relevant to administrative decision-making, and describe related rights and responsibilities for cadets and faculty.n addition, several recent court cases will be discussed as examples of how institutions can use an ongoing dialogue to ensure that students are appropriately accommodated, and that the accommodation process is transparent and flexible.Discussion will be encouraged.

Understanding ADHD at VMI

Information will focus on the following areas:
- Brief overview discussing the rise in ADHD diagnoses and explanations that might support the increase in students being diagnosed with ADHD;
- Facts about ADHD, VMI, and the military;
- Social, emotional, and behavioral symptoms of ADHD;
- Teaching and learning strategies that are effective in managing ADHD; and,
- Providing a cadet perspective(s) regarding ADHD and academic and military life at VMI.
Time will be allotted for questions at the end of the panel discussion.

Learning to Read is Rocket Science: How the human brain is not born to read and what we can do about it

One in five people have language processing challenges such as dyslexia.What do students with dyslexia experience?How can educators reach such learners?What strengths accompany “dyslexic minds?” How do we identify students with dyslexia?The answers to these questions will be explored at this workshop.

Program Series Wrap-up

Faculty and staff who have participated in one or more of the workshops will discuss what they have learned.There will be an opportunity for questions, concerns, and suggestions for future workshop topics.
