The Economics and Business Department provides cadets with a fully enriched program by offering varied opportunities and activities outside the classroom. Extracurricular activities in support of the academic program include the visiting scholars' programs under the Northern and Conquest Chair endowments, the John W. and Jane M. Roberts' American Free Enterprise Program, the VMI chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon (the international honor society in economics), the VMI chapter of Sigma Beta Delta (the international honor society in business), and the Cadet Investment Group, which affords actual experience in securities investments. We also co-host an economics seminar series with Washington & Lee. Click here for more information on this series.
Our department places a special emphasis on assisting cadets who are interested in practical internship experience, with an internship coordinator who assists cadets in securing summer internships in various fields of business. Internships are arranged for compensation and/or course credit in the department.
Three awards, the Wheat Medal, the Philpott Medal and the Roberts medal, recognize the top graduating seniors in economics and business studies. The Wall Street Journal Award recognizes excellence in both economics and business courses. Academic Excellence Awards are presented annually to the top members of the upper three classes.
