Major Jonathan T. Hartsock
A native of Roanoke, Virginia Maj. Jonathan T. Hartsock began his military career upon graduation from the Virginia Military Institute, where he was commissioned as an armor officer in December 2000. Maj. Hartsock’s first assignment was with the 1st Battalion, 13th Armor at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader and Battalion Scout Platoon Leader. During this time Maj. Hartsock deployed to Kuwait in support of OPERATION DESERT SPRING in 2002 and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM from 2003-2004. In May 2004 he was selected as the Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy Commanding General, 24th Infantry Division at Fort Riley and deployed again to OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in November 2004. While deployed he served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy Commanding General, Special Operations, Central Command (SOCCENT).
Upon redeployment in 2005, Maj. Hartsock attended the Infantry Captain’s Career Course at Fort Benning, GA. He was then assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and Fort Bragg, NC and from May 2006 to May 2010 where he was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment as the Assistant Operations Officer, Commander of A Troop/1-73 CAV, and Commander of C Troop/1-73 CAV. In these positions Maj. Hartsock deployed to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM from Nov 2006 to February 2008 and to Haiti in support of OPERATION UNIFIED RESPONSE in January 2010. Upon redeployment, Maj. Hartsock was then assigned to the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade where he assumed command of C Co (LRSC)/ 1-38 CAV in June 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM in August 2010. Upon redeployment in 2011, he attended Intermediate Level Education and then returned to the 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry where he served as the S3/Operations Officer and Executive Officer from August 2011 to April 2013. From May 2013 to January 2014 Maj. Hartsock deployed with the 525th BFSB to Kosovo in support of OPERATION JOINT GUARDIAN where he served as Commander of the Joint-Regional Detachment East. Maj. Hartsock reported to the Army ROTC Department at VMI in April 2014.
Maj. Hartsock is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course, Infantry Captain’s Career Course, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC), the Joint Commendation Medal, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge and Ranger Tab.
Maj. Hartsock is married to the former Jenny Kirk of Missouri. Together, they have one son, Colton, who was born in July 2010.
