Bruce C. Gottwald, Jr. '81

Bruce Gottwald Jr. has been Managing Director of Jonah, LLC, a private investment management company in Richmond, Virginia, since 1996. After graduating from VMI with a BA degree in History, Mr. Gottwald began his business career with the Ethyl Corporation as a marketing and financial analyst. In 1984 he earned an MBA from the College of William & Mary and started working with First Colony Life Insurance, an Ethyl subsidiary, in product development.

Concentrating his efforts with both corporations, he was promoted to Vice President and Treasurer of Ethyl and Chairman and CEO of First Colony in 1992. Over the next five years, he served on the Board of Directors for Ethyl Corporation, First Colony Corporation, Albemarle Corporation, Signet Banking Corporation, and Paragon Mutual Funds. He retired from First Colony in 1996 upon its sale to GE Capital and began his leadership of Jonah, LLC.

Mr. Gottwald currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Hempstead in Hope, Arkansas; and in 2007 was appointed to the Board of Southern Bridge Capital – Panama. Active in community affairs, he is a member of the Board of Directors Emeritus of the YMCA, and on the boards of Union Presbyterian Seminary and the Children’s Home Society of Virginia. He also serves as an Elder of First Presbyterian Church. He is past chairman of the Metro Richmond YMCA Capital Campaign, and a past board member of St. Catherine’s School and the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

With an avid interest in intercollegiate athletics, evidenced by his participation on the soccer and lacrosse teams during his cadetship, Mr. Gottwald served as President of the VMI Keydet Club, Inc., the Institute’s athletic fund-raising organization, from 1995–97. Until his appointment to the VMI Board of Visitors, he was a trustee with the VMI Foundation, and he serves on the Foundation’s investment group, VMI Holdings, LLC.

Mr. Gottwald is the proud Father of six children, Nancy (22), Caroline (20), Bruce III (18), Hays (16), Kimberly (12), and Lily (9).
