Major General Daniel E. Long, Jr.

(The Adjutant General of Virginia, appointed July 2010) 

Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr.Major General Long, a 49-year veteran of the Virginia National Guard, was appointed Adjutant General on 14 July 2010. He rose through the ranks of the Guard and is now responsible for the combat readiness, administration and training of more than 9,000 Army and Air National Guard personnel. Prior to appointment to Adjutant General he served for three years as Commander, Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS) at Fort Monroe, Virginia. The unit responds to catastrophic chemical, biological and nuclear attacks in the Northern Command area of responsibility.

General Long graduated officer candidate School Fort Benning, Georgia and has served in a broad range of Command and Staff assignments. He has commanded at every level including a Combat Engineer Company, an Engineer Battalion, and an infantry Division (Light). Prior to Commanding the 29th Infantry Division (Light), he served as the Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver), and deployed with the 29th Infantry Division (Light) as the Deputy Commander Multinational Division North, Operation Force, Bosnia Herzegovina (2001-2002).

His later assignments include Principal Assistant to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, responsible for formulation and coordinating plans and support to the Southwest US border security mission. He also served as the senior military officer assigned to the joint Iraq/Afghanistan Study Group and commanded Task Force care/Katrina in Louisiana. He was the Deputy Director then Director of the project and contracting Office in Iraq from September 2004 to September 2005 and commanded the 29th Infantry Division (Light) from August 2002 to August 2004.

General Long graduated Magna Cum Laude from Liberty University with a BS Degree, graduated from the US Army War College, and is a graduate of the Senior Military Leadership course at the Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include Ranger Tab, Expert Infantry Badge, Air Assault and numerous ribbons.

He has an extensive background in construction and construction management. He and his wife Diane have a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren.
