Swimming and Diving - Highlights
The current era of VMI swimming and diving, led by head coach Bill Nicholson, has been one of renaissance. After winning back-to-back Northeastern Conference titles in 2005-06 and 2006-07, the men's program jumped to the newly formed Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, a conference formed by the swimming programs from the Atlantic Sun, MEAC, Southern and Big South Conferences.
There, VMI has seen swimmers such as James Goodwillie '12 earn All-Conference honors, and in 2010-11, enjoyed a renewal of its diving program behind volunteer assistant coach Ray Porter. Porter mentored Dallas Disbro '12 to all-conference honors in both the one-meter and three-meter diving disciplines, and was named the League's Men's Diving Coach of the Year for his efforts.
This season, both Disbro and Goodwillie return for their senior seasons, as the Keydets look to post even more success at February's CCSA Championships.
The women's swimming and diving program began as a fledgling, non-scholarship team in 2006-07, and has grown consistently since. Two years into its development, the team won its first dual, a 52-51 victory over NJIT, and then repeated that win the following season, when scholarships began. With the expected crossover from the water polo program, and a group of returners led by sophomore Mia Cunicelli, the future looks bright for VMI Women's Swimming and Diving.
