  • Keydet Club Hosts 2014 Scholarship Awards Banquet

    November 12, 2014The VMI Keydet Club hosted yet another large crowd in Crozet Hall for the Scholarship Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 18, 2014 with more than 615 of VMI’s cadet-athletes, parents, endowed scholarship donors, annual full scholarship donors, fund representatives, coaches and VMI administrators in attendance. The evening's guest speaker was Major General Cedric Wins '85. MG Wins shared with the audience the need for honorable men and women in society and the need for service to our country via civilian or military service. He told the cadet-athletes that “successful people fail, but great people learn from their failures.” He expanded on his time in the military, and told the cadet-athletes that he learned that “sometimes great leadership requires the ability to be a dedicated and devoted follower as well.”Read More →

    Best Regrets: VMI's John McKenna and the Lost Age of College Football is a captivating book that tells the story of VMI football coach John McKenna, as told by sports author Roland Lazenby, VMI Class of 1974, along with veteran sportswriter Mike Ashley. McKenna was head coach at VMI for 13 seasons during an era in which the NCAA mandated one platoon football. A staunch disciplinarian, who was feared, loved, and always respected by his players, McKenna led his teams to four Southern Conference Championships, six consecutive winning seasons, and an undefeated season in 1957.

    “I guess my drive to get involved and support VMI was more out of the tremendous gratitude I had, and still have, for the opportunities VMI has given me. I’m not proud of it, but the fact is, I was initially turned down for admissions in the winter of 1966, but strong encouragement from a few VMI alumni at that time got me an opportunity for which I will forever be grateful. I wasn’t a good student nor was I an outstanding cadet, but VMI certainly impacted me and my life, and I believe VMI still impacts the lives of so many young people today” said Costen.Read More →
