SSG Michael Grimm comes to VMI after two years as the Head Lacrosse Coach at The Citadel - The Military College of South Carolina and as a Veteran-Cadet student. Prior to his coaching position at The Citadel, SSG Grimm served 10 years as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army. SSG Grimm entered the Army from Yorktown, VA and reported to Basic Training on September 11th 2002 at Ft. Benning, GA. Upon completion of Basic Training, SSG Grimm graduated from the 31U Signal Systems Specialist course at Ft. Gordon, GA in April 2003. Following Airborne School, he graduated from the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, GA. From May 2003-November 2007 he served in the 1st Ranger BN as a Mortar Platoon Communications Chief, Fire Direction Center RTO, and Alpha Company RTO. In his 4 years with the Rangers, SSG Grimm deployed to Iraq twice and Afghanistan four times. In 2007, SSG Grimm was assigned to the 5th Ranger Training Battalion, Camp Frank D. Merrill as the Tactical Communications NCOIC supporting 15 weeks of the Mountain Phase of Ranger School. In 2008, he was selected for a Special Missions Unit as a Technical Collections and Surveillance HUMINT Operator as part of Defense HUMINT and the Special Operations Task Force. From 2009-2010, SSG Grimm deployed numerous times for CONUS and OCONUS missions and to Afghanistan as the Senior DH Technical Collections Officer to the Special Operations Task Force. In his career SSG Grimm has graduated from 75th Ranger Regt Signal Course, Inter-Agency Technical Operator Course, Joint Special Operations Command Technical Course, and the Defense Intelligence Agency Technical Collections- Surveillance Course to name a few.
SSG Grimm is an “army brat “and comes from a long line of professional soldiers, his grandfather COL (RET) Philip D. Grimm was an (up thru the ranks) Infantry Officer who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His father Major (RET) Russell A. Grimm (USMA 1976) retired after 20 years of service in the Infantry and MI branch with assignments in the 2nd Ranger Bn and the 10th Mountain Division. His Uncle LTC. (RET) David K. Grimm, INF is a graduate of VMI 1986. A graduate of Kecoughtan HS in Hampton, VA, SSG Grimm attended Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA as an ECP contract in 1997 and then transferred to The Citadel-Military College of South Carolina Class of 2002 where he was a walk on football player and played lacrosse. SSG Grimm resides in Lexington, VA and has two children, Audrey (8) and William (4). In his free time SSG Grimm enjoys college lacrosse and football, fishing, BBQ and the Boston Red Sox!
