In August 2004, with support and encouragement from the dean and superintendent, the Department of Economics and Business submitted an accreditation plan to AACSB-International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
The Major Field Test in Business
For the second year in a row, the graduating first class economics and business majors scored in the top 5% of all schools taking the Educational Testing Service’s Major Field Test—Business.
Our Mission Statement
Perhaps the most important component of the department’s drive toward accreditation was the development of a mission statement.
New Faculty Faces
The department of Economics and Business has gone through an expansion! Here are some of the new faces in the department.
New Book Released
Colonel Stewart W. Husted, The John and Jane Roberts Chair of Free Enterprise Business, has recently written a book, George C. Marshall: Rubrics of Leadership.
Our faculty have been hard at work publishing research in academic journals as well as presenting their research at various conferences around the country and the world.
In the Spring semester, we were fortunate to have three distinguished speakers address to our cadets. We appreciate the time they’ve taken to address our cadets.
Engineering Entrepreneurship Initiative
The Engineering Entrepreneurship Initiative (EEI) is a new program developed to give Entrepreneurship students the opportunity to write business plans for patented intellectual property.
The VMI Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI) was established by directive of the Dean of Faculty to more fully integrate student scholarly inquiry into the VMI experience.
The Cadet Investment Group
The Cadet Investment Group (CIG) was founded in 1986 with $200,000 provided by the VMI Foundation.
Beginning summer 2007, the department has instituted an “internship for credit” program.
The Class of 2005
In May of 2005, 29 cadets graduated with an ECBU degree. 23 responded to a recent survey. Here's what they're up to:
Cadet Field Trip
On Friday, 23 March, 2007, 18 enthusiastic ECBU majors traveled to Richmond to tour the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank and to talk with Ray Owens, an economist working for the Fed.
The Annual ODE Banquet to honor our top cadets was held on March 27th.
Hinman Award Winner
What began as a summer undergraduate research opportunity in 2005, concluded with the
Wilbur S. Hinman, Jr. ’06 Research Award for Cadet Michael Canning, 07, at this year’s Institute Awards.
