To Advance VMI
The VMI Foundation’s mission is simple: to raise, steward, and invest the funds entrusted to it by members of the VMI Family for the sole purpose of advancing Virginia Military Institute.
Established in 1936 and beginning its operations in 1937, the VMI Foundation--which is a private, non-profit corporation--annually raises tens of millions of dollars in gifts and commitments from VMI’s alumni and friends and manages hundreds of millions of dollars in endowments that generate support for the Institute.
With this private money, the VMI Foundation supports the constant improvement of the Institute’s academic and co-curricular programs. It also supports capital improvements on Post necessary to ensure that cadets have modern facilities in which to live, learn, and compete. The VMI Foundation is the source of millions of dollars in financial aid to cadets, three out of ten of which require scholarship support in order to attend the Institute.
In the current academic year, the VMI Foundation will provide more than $14.2 million in direct aid to the Institute’s faculty, staff, and cadets and millions more in the form of indirect aid. This aid ensures that VMI’s education remains characterized by rigorous academics, a demanding co-curriculum, and ample athletic opportunities.
The VMI Foundation also funds the vital work of the VMI Alumni Association and cooperates with the VMI Alumni Association and the VMI Keydet Club to strengthen the bonds within the VMI Family and the ties alumni and friends have to the Institute.
