Engineering and Construction

The Construction Office plans and executes the Institute’s $270 million construction program across VMIs’ multiple properties to provide world class, state of the art infrastructure that enables the education and training of America’s 21st Century military and civilian leaders.

The Office’s ten personnel manage construction projects from initial concept development through project completion and handover. Working closely with some of the most renowned Architect, Engineering and Construction firms in the nation, our mandate is to safely deliver best in class facilities within budget, scope and time constraints to the highest standards of quality with the least possible disruption to daily operations and training.

Recently Completed Projects:

  • Aquatic Center – construction of $44 million Olympic class facility
  • Gray-Minor Stadium Improvements – $3 million installation of artificial turf field and improvements to fencing, dugouts and drainage system
  • Superintendent’s Quarters - $2.5 million update, repair and renovation of the residence

Projects Beginning Construction in 2024

  • Post Wide Safety and Security – installation of gates and barriers to secure Post
  • Cocke and Memorial Hall – projects to correct drainage issues and water damage
  • Nichols Engineering Building – 28,000 square foot expansion and renovation of existing building
  • Barracks Improvements – installation of new security, communication and access control systems as well as New Barracks courtyard repaving.

Projects Currently in Design Phase:

  • Moody Hall Construction – replaces existing building with a new, 50,000 square foot multi-use facility
  • CLE Phase II – a 62,000 square foot addition to the existing building and a 440 space parking garage
  • Nichols Engineering Building – 28,000 square foot expansion and renovation of existing building
  • Barracks Windows – replacement of 700+ windows in Old and New Barracks

Coming Soon:

  • New Market Battlefield Park - $28 million renovation to Museum of the Civil War and improvements to roads, parking and historic buildings on site.
  • Admissions and Finance Buildings - $5 million renovation to the existing buildings
  • Physical Plant/Hinty Hall Expansion - $26 million project to expand and improve existing facilities maintenance and storage facilities at Lackey Farm, North Post and along the Chessie Trail.
  • Turman House – roughly $2.5 million renovation of the main house, apartments and outbuildings. Will convert the main house for use as a residence.
