Grounds Lead Worker

VMI is accepting applications for a full-time Grounds Lead Worker in Facilities Management.

Job Description:

  • Perform day to day work schedule and lead a crew with the maintenance of grounds, such as turf maintenance and repair, tree maintenance, leaf removal, mowing and event setups. Occasionally aid in instructing other employees in the operation of equipment.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, mowers, graders, snowplows and item of equipment related to snow removal, preventive and corrective maintenance. Make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment, aid in making major repairs; clean and service equipment.
  • Maintain a variety of planting, landscaped areas and tasks that include but are not limited to mowing, set ups, deliveries, minor equipment maintenance, grounds care and maintenance, landscape installation, snow and ice removal, applying nutrients as required and police grounds.
  • Occasionally working weekends and evenings to support VMI functions and emergencies.
  • Assist with completing and maintaining accurate record keeping including data in the work order (CMMS) system for accurate accountability.
  • Ensure all personnel adhere to policies/guidelines governing conduct, wearing of the uniform, leave, proper operation of vehicles, maintaining equipment, wearing personal protective equipment, etc., to maintain Physical Plant as a safe and professional place to work.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required and directed by supervision.
  • Maintain planting and fertilization records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management such as event preparation and support, inclement weather support, special project teams, tree maintenance.
  • Identify as essential personnel for responding to emergencies and/or natural disasters.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening).
  • Problem solving skills and adaptability.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with clean driving record required.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience using grounds related equipment and user level maintenance.
  • Experience with fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Knowledge of plants, trees, flowers, and grasses.
  • Experience with or knowledge of work order systems.
