The George C. Marshall Foundation Award was presented to Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the 66th U.S. Secretary of State, and current director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Located at VMI, the Foundation is a nonprofit named for Gen. George C. Marshall, Class of 1901.

Prior to heading home for Thanksgiving furlough, the Virginia Military Institute Class of 2024 celebrated Ring Figure, a highly anticipated milestone, on Nov. 17 and 18.

For the first time ever, the VMI Ethics and Debate Team finished in the top four at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition. By winning 4th place, the team qualified for the 27th Annual Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.
A contingency of two cadets and one professor recently presented research at the American Chemical Society Southeastern Regional Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ACS is the world’s largest scientific association with a membership of over 154,000 chemists, chemical engineers, and others.

Cadets participated in the annual three-day Appalachia Regional Model Arab League debate recently at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. MAL helps prepare students to be knowledgeable, well-trained, and effective citizens as well as civic and public affairs activists.

The show will be presented in “storyteller mode,” and includes stories and music in celebration of Christmas, Hanukkah, and the winter season, featuring some from VMI Theatre’s past holiday shows. Performances will be on Friday, Dec. 2 & Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2:00 p.m.

Founders Day this year looked a little different courtesy of Tropical Storm Nicole. While the howitzers did not ring out, and the parade was canceled, the Institute did get to honor and celebrate Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III '62, superintendent emeritus, with a special ceremony and reception.

Lt. Col. Sara Whipple, associate professor of psychology, wanted to provide a way for the students in her Developmental Psychology course to connect the knowledge they have learned in class to a real world environment, so she recently took them on a field trip to Augusta Correctional Center.
Brian Jackson ’24, a cadet majoring in English with a concentration in literary studies, philosophy, and rhetoric and writing hosts a talk show called “In the Life of a Personal Trainer” that broadcasts once a month on WDCA Fox 5 Plus, a television station in Washington, D.C.

The George C. Marshall Foundation will host a lecture by author Peter Shinkle on his new book, “Uniting America: How FDR and Henry Stimson Brought Democrats and Republicans Together to Win World War II”.
