National Student Clearinghouse Cybersecurity Incident Being Closely Monitored

LEXINGTON, Va, July 19, 2023—Virginia Military Institute has been made aware of a National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) cybersecurity incident with one of their third-party software vendors, MOVEit Transfer. There are thousands of colleges and universities that use NSC for maintaining student data and gathering reports. Specifically, VMI uses NSC for multiple services, including enrollment reporting and transcript services. MOVEit Transfer is not a direct vendor of VMI, but according to the announcement, a breach involved an outside source obtaining files through this transfer tool.

NSC has launched an investigation and has been working with institutions, including VMI, to provide updates on the investigation, which should be completed within a few weeks. VMI will then work with NSC to notify any individuals affected within the VMI community. There is nothing at this time to indicate VMI data was specifically targeted or that any VMI cadet information has been obtained.

Internal VMI files and data have not been impacted by this breach. MOVEit Transfer does not have access to internal cadet or employee systems. VMI cadets, faculty, staff, and alumni are always encouraged to keep and update strong passwords, report and delete any suspicious emails, avoid free Wi-Fi networks, and never click any links from unknown sources.
