Marshall Foundation to Host Author: Book About G.I. Journalists During WWII

LEXINGTON, Va. Oct 2, 2023 — The George C. Marshall Foundation will host a lecture by associate professor of law at New York Law School and author, Molly Guptill Manning, on her book, “The War of Words,” on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 5:30 p.m., at their building located on VMI Parade Avenue on Virginia Military Institute post.

The event is part of the ongoing Legacy Lecture series. It is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

In her talk, Manning will discuss how Army Chief of Staff George Marshall revitalized the Army’s tradition of unit-based newspapers with the distribution of field kits of printing gear, on which the mostly novice journalists cranked out their news sheets. At a time when the press around the world was censored, troop journalists on the Western front counterpunched against Nazi propaganda and kept soldiers well-informed.

A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. Copies of Manning’s book will be available for $25.99. To make reservations and for more information, email events@marshallfoundation.org or call 540-463-7103, ext. 138. The presentation will also be livestreamed on the Marshall Foundation’s YouTube channel https://bit.ly/2Or0E8D. A recording of the lecture will be available to view free online immediately after the event.
