The 13th Annual VMI Leadership and Ethics Conference was held Mon., Oct. 31, and Tues., Nov. 1. The conference focused on both the personal aspects of developing and exercising moral courage and the organizational environment set by leaders to encourage respectful, honest, and candid conversation.

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) is sponsoring "Breakfast with the Expert," a discussion series at Virginia Military Institute that provides opportunities for cadets to learn from and interact with industry experts. It is organized by CCI fellows, Dr. Sherif Abdelhamid and Dr. Imran Ghani.

Formed in 2014, the Building BRIDGES Club is spanning to new lengths as it further connects cadets, faculty, and staff with the local community through civic engagement. Recently, the service club has taken on additional objectives of sponsoring events and college debates.

As part of its ongoing Master Guide Tour Series, the Jackson House Museum is presenting a new guided tour called “Jackson’s Maxims: Words to Live By.” This tour opened Oct. 1 and will be available to the public through Dec. 31.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and Dean’s Academic Speakers Fund present four French films as part of the 2022-23 Albertine Cinémathèque film series. Albertine Cinémathèque expands access to French cinema and supports film programming at American colleges and universities.

Virginia Military Institute recently appointed new staff members to two essential positions: Lt. Col. Joseph Hagy has filled the role of director of admissions, and Lt. Col. Shannon Eskam is the new director of financial aid.

Col. Tappey H. Jones ’70, professor of chemistry at Virginia Military Institute, has had his findings recently been published in Nature: Communications Biology. This article covers findings of years of research, much collaboration with colleagues, and a bit of providence.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures has been awarded a competitive $141 thousand grant called STARTALK for the 2023-2024 academic year. The grant is directly funded by the National Security Agency (NSA) and provides scholarships for for six credit hours of Arabic for 15 students.

Virginia Military Institute welcomes guest speaker Dr. Uva de Aragón for a lecture titled, “The Fortune (or Curse) of Being a Writer” on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:45 p.m. at Preston Library located at 411 Letcher Avenue on post. It is free and open to the public.

The George C. Marshall Foundation will host author Robert O’Connell for a lecture on his new book, “Team America: Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, Eisenhower, and the World They Forged” on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 5:30 p.m., at their building located on VMI Parade Avenue on post.
