Attention parents and cadets - Tuition for the Spring 2025 semester is due by Dec. 15, 2024.

Call to Duty Scholarships

In addition to the benefits of a military-style education and a cadetship focused on developing future leaders, a new scholarship opportunity further distinguishes the Institute amongst other colleges and universities offering ROTC programs

VMI's Call to Duty Scholarships provide additional funding to appointed students who are recipients of the three and four-year ROTC national scholarships. ROTC national scholarships are awarded independently by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The ROTC units at VMI are valuable resources for information about specific program requirements and expectations.

These Call to Duty Scholarships will cover the cost of housing (room) and food (board) at the Institute for cadet recipients.

This is an annual award. To keep the scholarship each semester, cadets must continue to demonstrate eligibility for their ROTC scholarship.   ROTC will work with the Office of Financial Aid to determine continued semester eligibility prior to the beginning of each semester.

If you are interested in applying for this exciting opportunity for financial support during your cadetship at VMI, contact the Office of Financial Aid today with any questions regarding eligibility.

Please note: The Call to Duty Scholarship is awarded after all types of other financial aid, excluding loans, have been applied, and is based on available funding.

A life-changing opportunity

Recipients of the Call to Duty Scholarship from the Class of 2027 sat down with the VMI Alumni Agencies about the impact of the financial support on their ability to afford college, as well as its importance in choosing VMI as their destination.

“In my case, at least, it’s helped a lot. And I can’t think of any other college that offers anything like it. The fact that it will cover … room and board was huge for me because I had the ROTC scholarship, which paid for my tuition. And then, I had the Call to Duty Scholarship, which paid for room and board. And both of those things on their own were too much for me to be able to afford. And so … it’s what made me able to afford to be able to come here.”

“So before the Call to Duty Scholarship, my decision truly would have to have been The Citadel because it was much more cost-effective with being in state. But with the Call [to] Duty, I was able to pick VMI because that’s where I wanted to go, and I was able to financially afford it.”

Zachary Denton

“What swayed my decision from VMI versus Coastal Carolina [University], I would say, was financial aid and also the attitude of the faculty. … Coastal didn’t have an equivalent to the Call to Duty Scholarship. And they didn’t have nearly as many supporting scholarships, either, for their ROTC program because they weren’t as focused on that."

WHY VMI?
