Commencement Ceremony

Commencement is the culmination of four years of study at the Institute. The walk across the stage during this ceremony is a moment every graduate remembers.

Anticipate heavy traffic. In the event of inclement weather, alternate parking may be necessary. Check the website for alerts or additional information.

Shuttle service will run continuously across Post from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and following the ceremony.

Memorial Hall will open at 9:30 a.m. Arrive in time to be seated by 10:45 a.m. Seating is on a first-come, first served basis.

Due to space constraints and security reasons, coolers, backpacks, and baskets are not allowed at any of the VMI ceremonies. Strollers must be able to be folded and out of the aisles. All carry-in items are subject to search at the door.

Wheelchair seating is available. Handicap drop-off is immediately in front of Memorial Hall. Contact the Chief of Staff's Office at for handicap seating needs.

Commencement Address - VMI Board of Visitors Vice President, Lara Chambers '03

  Currently, VMI policy is that those fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks on post. All others are required to wear face coverings and practice safe distancing as per our AY21-22 COVID Matrix.

For the health and safety of all in attendance, we also request that if you are feeling sick or have any symptoms of COVID or influenza, that you follow the CDC recommendation of remaining at home. We will be livestreaming the Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m.
