'Titan of a VMI Man' G. Gilmer Minor III '63 Dies at Age 82

The Superintendent regrets to inform the VMI community of the death of G. Gilmer “Gil” Minor III ’63, who passed away May 4, 2023, at the age of 82, at home surrounded by family. He was described by Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins ’85 as a “titan of a VMI man.”

VMI Employee Retires After 43 Years

It takes a dedicated team to keep the uniforms worn by the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Military Institute impeccably clean, crisp, and worthy of the respect they deserve. Belva Drain, a vital member of the laundry services team, has retired after 43 years. 

The VMI team receives their Sandhurst Medallion for placing fifth overall at the annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition at West Point.

Team members of Ranger Challenge, the “varsity sport” of the program at Virginia Military Institute, placed fifth, winning a Sandhurst Medallion for the top five overall teams out of 48 teams in the annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point.

Visualizing three-dimensional (3D) molecules on a two-dimensional piece of paper can be a struggle for any chemistry student. Lt. Col. Dan Harrison ’05, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, used his experience with research software to find a tool to address this challenge.

The 13th superintendent of Virginia Military Institute, Lt. Gen. Josiah Bunting III ’63, was on post April 25 to reunite with his brother rats of the Class of 1963, but he spent a portion of the morning in Preston Library in a ceremony to recognize his recent contributions to VMI’s archives.
